What’s In My Bag?

invisalign-disclosureI was talking to my friend about how much I love “What’s in My Bag” posts on the internet, simply because I am crazy curious about other people. I finally admitted to her that I would love it if she (or any of my friends, really) passed me her handbag and gave me full permission to go through it. “That,” I said, “would be a really fun fifteen minutes for me.” To which she replied, “Omg me tooooo.”

I’m not sure *why* I’m like this, but maybe it’s because I place a lot of stock in real-life reviews. I stayed at my friend Sunnie’s house, and while I was in her shower I yelled out, “HEY IS THIS SHAMPOO AMAZING? DO YOU LOVE IT?”

She yelled back, “NO I HATE IT. I tried it out and it makes my hair feel weird, but I’m using it up anyway.”

And automatically that shampoo was placed on my mental do not buy ever list. I mean I probably sound borderline sociopathic at this point, but I really just like learning from other people. When a friend told me she keeps a bag in her car with a spare change of clothes for each kid and a pack of wipes just in case, I was all, dang, that’s smart, went home, and packed up the same bag.

Often for events, I’ll room with my friend Jessica, and when we’re hanging out in the bathroom, doing our hair or whatever, I’ll ask her about whatever product she’s using.

“This is your favorite lipstick, right? Because I’ve seen it travel with you to like four different cities and a foreign country.”

And then that gets placed on my mental try this next list. Normal, right? ::stares::

So anyway, I just really want to see what you have inside your bag. Here, I’ll go first.

I really love crossbody bags because they keep my arms and hands free. (I’ve waxed poetic about them before.)

What's In My Bag
I usually just carry a small crossbody bag, especially when I’m out solo, but if I’m out with the girls, I bring along an extra tote. Even though they’re bigger now and everyone’s potty trained, I keep an extra pair of clothes on hand for Minnie, and because of allergies and asthma, I have to carry a wide arsenal of emergency meds (four epi-pens, Benadryl, an inhaler, etc). I like keeping my stuff separate so I’m not wading through a huge bag to find my phone or my keys.

It’s small and light, and the only downside is I cannot fit a lot in it, but then I’m only traveling with ‘essentials’ and my bag doesn’t turn into a big black hole of crumpled receipts and little kid snacks.

What's In My Bag || NEON FRESH– Honore crossbody bag, Botkier
– Little red pouch holds 1) my Invisalign aligner, 2) a travel toothbrush, 3) a travel tube of toothpaste
Bow Earrings that you can barely see. I took them off and slipped them in an inside pocket.
– Altoids: the tiny kind are the only bearable ones, IMO
– Contact drops, because I never want to TEAR OFF MY CORNEA ever again
Aviator sunglasses, with little kid finger prints all over them
Magic wallet, J.Crew. I downgraded to this slim little wallet and I’m not looking back
Blush, Tarte. Kind of stupid that it’s in my bag without a brush, but it somehow found its way in there. I don’t usually travel with makeup (not enough room), unless I have a larger bag with me.
Lip butter, Korres: I will forever use this product until some sort of cosmetic fairy godmother produces something better.
Diorshow mascara: not impressed with this, to be honest. I buy teensy mascaras because I change them out every three months (this just came as an extra in a Sephora order).
Pong case to represent my phone which I used to take this photo. :)
Skullcandy Rasta Earbuds (ha!)
A Pilot G2 0.38: not the fanciest pen in the world, but a darn good one. I stock up on these (and run out of them) often.

Your turn! Upload a photo of your bag contents to Instagram or Twitter and use the hashtag #heylookinmybag and tag @Invisalign. We’ll randomly pick three photos and send you either a $50 Sephora gift card (to stock up on teensy mascaras, if you want) or a $50 Amazon gift card (you pick). Throw it up there, and we’ll announce winners on Sunday, March 30th <—totally my bday. *<|:)

Snapping a pic as soon as I get home tonight. Good thing I cleaned all the receipts out of my purse this morning!

Also, I’m the exact same way about relying on reviews from friends/family/randos at the store for beauty products. It fascinates me what other people use and why.

I hoard Pilot G2 .38 pens at work. I have a separate ‘guest’ pen collection that I insist people use and I eagerly stock up on the G2s whenever I visit our sister company because mine doesn’t order them. They are the PERFECT pen because they are cheap, have a great ink, and always work.

Forgive my gushing, but I feel the world must know.

I love ‘What’s in my bag’ posts too, but I feel like mine would be a huge photo since I have a bunch of little pencil bags to organize my 5 lipsticks and chapsticks or my earbuds. Does anyone else do that?

  • Reply Megan March 26, 2014 at 11:59 am

Ok two things: I may do the picture thing, but even though I have a relatively small bag, I do have some crazy receipts/papers/why is this in my bag stuff and I don’t know if it will all fit in one picture… hmm

Also, I just got back from vacation so I was not reading your blog regularly like I usually do, but apparently I was thinking about you because I had a dream that you had a contest that was inspired by a comment I made on your 100th post and I (and a few other readers) got to meet you in person. Creepy or cool? Please say cool.

Also, I too have a cross-body bag, due in large part to your recommendation!!

  • Reply Alicia March 26, 2014 at 12:01 pm

omg I love looking at other people’s stuff too! I think Us Weekly has celebrities do this and it’s always my favorite, regardless of whose bag it is. My bag is a whole lot messier than yours, but I’ll have to upload a pic anyway! Totally need to stock up on mini mascara (I always buy the minis too).

  • Reply Jessica March 26, 2014 at 12:01 pm

Totally uploading a pic today but I am more excited that you and my daughter share the same birthday! :) She will be 4 and it is having a Frozen bday party (which seems sadly appropriate considering it is still freezing and snowing here in RI)- you are totally invited :)
What kind of bag do you carry the kids stuff in? Do you put your bag in that bag (yes I am just and nosy!). i still carry a change of clothes and her inhaler/spacer which seems to end up taking up as much room as another small child.

  • Reply Laura McClellan March 26, 2014 at 12:02 pm

First of all…your bag… WANT. Cross body are my faves.

Second of all I will absolutely participate in this. I tried once for OKDOTHIS (a photography/social app with photo prompts) but realized I needed my phone to take the picture and apparently couldn’t figure out that solution.

I think this is great…just not something I can do! I have little kids and I have the “whale” of a purse with the spare diaper and little kid snacks divided out form all of my reciepts for the month, my wallet, spare change, blah, blah, blah…oh, and my whole medicine cabinet. LOL There might not be a camera with a wide enough lens to show you all the things in my purse!

These are seriously my favorite posts and I would not be upset if it was a series. Just sayin’.

Must be a writer thing. I like the 05s.

Another Pilot G-2 lover here. I hoard the blue ink 05s. Lord help the person who tries to walk away with one of them. Just ask my husband.

how much does that magic wallet hold? I’m in the market for something smaller. Thanks!

  • Reply Juliana March 26, 2014 at 1:42 pm

I LOVE my magic wallet from JCrew. I bought that bad boy when I was in college over 10 years ago and I still use it as my travel wallet.

  • Reply Steph Reiner March 26, 2014 at 1:59 pm

Uh it’s totally normal to go off of what other people think! I have 2 sisters and 11 girl cousins and we are always sharing what we use/love/hate/can’t live without. So, sure you might end up at the family Thanksgiving dinner sporting the same shirt or pair of shoes, but it’s a welcome coincidence because someone shared something they love and then you can love it too. And I appreciate that I’m not the only nosy one. :D

Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this. I totally understand why you want to go through other people’s bags.

And umm, can we talk about how cute your purse is? I’ve been looking for a new one, and I may just have to grab it next month after I strip search my couches for loose change.

  • Reply Kate March 26, 2014 at 2:49 pm

Seriously important question: how do you ::really:: like the sunglasses? Do they fall when you tilt over for a toddler? Do they get stuck in your hair when you do a quick run into a store?! I love going through a friend’s purse but I’mlstly curious about finding the perfect shades!

    • Reply Kristin April 1, 2014 at 5:29 pm

My boyfriend & I each have a pairs of our glasses in our 2 vehicles: his glasses are http://goo.gl/aQGRoR, & mine are http://goo.gl/FvQJ9G (discontinued I know :( ). If I leave mine in the house & have to use his aviators, this is my take on them (but just know that I have a pretty small head – like smaller than a 7 hat small). So, as much as I LOVE them for the sun-blocking and how cute they look on, these slip down from my nose all the time. Also I never put these on my head because the arms are so slender & bendable that they don’t really hold onto my small head (and in my boyfriends normal sized head case, if he put them on his head they would stretch those slender arms out so they then wouldn’t be tight while on his face) & yes the nose thing gets all stuck in my hair. But again, just my opinion. I like my Oakley’s because they have a decent thick plastic rim & arms so I can easily put them on my head for a bit & they will stay there & when on my face they stay on because the arms have more bend instead of being straight back. Anyways, there’s my 2 cents – good luck on finding the perfect shades (and when you do buy 2)!

Yay! I’m not the only one obsessed with other people’s purse contents/bathroom cabinets. That bag is swoon worthy, may go on my wish list.
I love all thing Korres, but dislike pots of lip goo cuz I hate dipping my figer in. Have you tried Fresh Sugar balms? I have bought second tubes of Rose and Petal, which I NEVER do, because I love them soooooo hard. Moisturizing, pretty wash of color, twist up, not too strong scent or flavor.
I can’t wait to stalk the hashtag :)

  • Reply Jenny March 26, 2014 at 3:15 pm

    Your CORNEA!!!!!! Oh. my.

  • Reply Sandy March 26, 2014 at 3:39 pm

I LOVE your crossbody bag! I’m not a fan of pocketbooks that look like a carry on so I travel light, too. I tweeted my bag stuff.
    PS – I’m a nosy-Josie as well.

  • Reply lonek8 March 26, 2014 at 3:52 pm

I am right there with you on being super nosy and curious about other people’s stuff. I get totally bummed out if I complement someone on their bag/shoes/misc and the don’t tell me exactly where they bought it. Or at least the brand name. I have definitely googled obsessively until I’ve identified something I liked and I saw on someone else. So I’m a stalker AND a copycat, awesome. Also, I completely need invisalign.

I would like to publically announce me love for G2 0.38 pens. It’s nice to know someone else is crazy about ultra fine gel pens!

  • Reply Wendy March 27, 2014 at 10:00 am

My son emptied my cross body Vera Bradley purse last night, coincidence?, I think not! LOL!

Wallet – which he could not figure out how to open – clamshell clasp style – thank goodness!
Checkbook – yes that makes me feel old
Travel pack of Kleenex – makes me feel even older
Eos chapstick – to which the toddler says ball and throws it for the dog – argh!
    Smartwool Hat – I live in Michigan – I don’t remember what spring/summer/sunshine are
Ink Pen – American flag decorated that I got from a work vendor but it’s clicky style so I like it

I’m pretty minimalist when it comes to what I carry in the purse itself. I carry a separate diaper bag for the boy when he comes along – not potty trained yet and we have a bun in the oven so that won’t be going away any time soon. I imagine I’ll still carry a change of clothes/underroos for him after potty training in the diaper bag.

Um love this, so MUCH. And whhhhhhat!?!! Birthday twins!!

  • Reply Robin B March 27, 2014 at 10:43 am

My bag is a black hole! I should downsize. Also, we use the same pens! Love them :)

  • Reply Kari March 27, 2014 at 10:53 am

Love it! I love these posts. I have a question. If I tag you and Invisalign in my photo will that count as being entered? I’m private in Instagram and don’t want to change my settings. Thanks!

  • Reply Lesley March 27, 2014 at 4:29 pm

I only use a clutch. I know, insane, but it totally works for me, the bare essentials. If we are going out or I am going somewhere for work, they fit in my laptop bag or another tote really easily.

My wallet (the size of a credit card but about 1-inch thick) love it!
My change purse, yes separate, but in Canada we ditched both 1 and 2 dollah bills for coins, so we end up with a lot of money in a change purse, like I can buy dinner for 4 out of my change.
    My keys.
    My phone.
In the zip pocket, I carry a few things like an antacid, a nail file, a spare hair elastic, and any mints I’ve grabbed off the bill at a restaurant. That’s it!
