Oh Yeaaa, I Recall Making Resolutions

dietbet-disclosureI’ve written before on how we all get hung up on the idea of January 1st being the day that our lives change dramatically. December 31st, I’m a slightly haphazard exerciser with a penchant for Diet Cokes and large pizzas, and suddenly on January 1st, I’m a demi-god who cannot even glance at a plate of fajitas without feelings of nausea rising up within me.

Lolololol yeeeeeaaa riiiiiiiiite.

But I’m all for goals. I’ve been thinking about the big picture on certain resolutions, then breaking them down into goals with actual deadlines. “Stick with yoga for a little while longer and get better at it” turns into “Okay maybe I can do a forearm stand by… my  birthday.” (I cannot yet, but I keep posting teensy bits of non-yogi-trying-yoga progress on Instagram. Here and here and here, if you like that sort of thing.)

I’m also trying to put action items under these goals. For example, I want to write an article (one; just one) for a certain websites in 2014. So my action items are 1) Write something that isn’t lame. 2) Ask three people I trust to proofread it. 3) Email it to the proper people.

My method isn’t foolproof, but it’s better (for me) than spouting out the usual “In 2014, I’m going to be more organized and healthier and I’m going to wear a monokini at the beach and I’m going to save more money and I’m going to organize every photo I’ve ever taken in the past ten years… and have drinks with Jimmy Fallon.”

I mean, I might as well say I’m going to teach Bigfoot how to Dougie (err-errybody luv me).

If your resolution for 2014 is to get in shape, my friend Kristen and I are hosting a DietBet. You know how gyms are completely packed at the beginning of a new year? That attendance always starts to wane by week #3, so I’m thinking of this DietBet as a way to resuscitate our resolutions. (Hang in there, buddy, I’m back on the wagon, I swear it.)

I’ve hosted a few in the past, and they’ve been yielding great results. (Um, with exception to the last one. Despite all our best intentions, we were sabotaged by Christmas hams and aunts feeding us and whatever. I received quite a few “Omggg I’m eating sugar cookies as I’m emailing this to you; can we do another DietBet in January when my willpower isn’t competing against baked goods?” emails.)     My inability to commit//finish things (projects, diets, sentences, large coffees, etc…) has always been one of my worst “quirks”. I have to take my resolutions one day at a time.
    So they look something like this, “You will eat clean today. All day. Here’s an apple.” Which by day 3 is “You will not eat that handful of Chuckles on your way to the couch. Go get an apple.” Which turns into “Why did I buy 2 lbs of valentines day candy!? What’s an apple..” Baby steps…

    Anyway, I just started the Transformer on Dietbet (a 6 month commitment!), but perhaps it’d be even more motivating to sign up for TWO bets! Is that allowed? I’m using myfitnesspal to keep myself in check, anyone else using it add me: tifaufmann :)

      I used that app but don’t follow anyone. It freaks me out, like, “LOOK WHAT I’VE ATE TODAY. LOOK AT ME GO OVER MY SODIUM. FOR SHAMMMEEEEE.” Do you enjoy following people and being followed? Do they have access to your weights and measurements you put on there, your food choices, or what?

        Nope, you can’t see what others are eating, so nosh those Cheetos, lady! I actually would like to be able to view other peoples diets, especially my super fit marathoner friends. It’d be nice to snag tips or mirror my meals off theirs. Only you can view anything “shameful” :P
        You can see if your friends have lost weight…and if they’ve logged any time on the treadmill that day. You can “You go, girl (or boy!)” your pals for running 4 miles before 7am and they can high five you for “vigorously cleaning” for an hour (don’t knock it, it’s 250 cals burned!)
        I like the “friends” aspect of myfitnesspal. It’s more of a virtual support group!

      Yeah, you can be in up to three DietBets at a time! I’ve always found myfitnesspal to be a great gauge of how I’m eating, but I’ve totally fallen off that wagon. I’ll find you on there, Tiffany!

    Why you always do this when I’m pregnant, Roo? Do one in June! K thanks bye.
    Weirdly, when I’m preggos I develop a serious aversion to the majority of baked goods and sweets. So at Christmas/thanksgiving I just sadly watched people stuff their faces with homemade truffles, pies, fancy cookies. I was all like, nah, I’ll just have some more meat. Boring. Or eggs. Waaaahhhhh.

      I am with you there Natasha! Unfortunately once baby is here I’m going to be wanting all those cookies I passed on. :( Do a diet bet in July! Baby will be out by then and I’ll be ready to be rid of the extra meat/egg weight.

      Oh you’re one of THOSE. Haha, that’s actually amazing. :) I’d be like “Jack, I need a chili dog. I’M PREGNANT.” and he’d be all “You eat an obnoxious amount of chili dogs when you’re not pregnant.” :P

        It’s a little ridic how much I crave beef and spinach. Gah. Don’t worry, the second this creature pops out the nursing hunger will strike and I’ll be eating brownies by the panful.

    I’ve never made resolutions. In fact, I remember being a kid somewhere around the age of 10 and telling a friend, “That’s dumb.”

    I had my gallbladder removed a couple years ago and was told that I wouldn’t have to change my diet- HA. HAHAHAHAHA. Over the course of a month I discovered that I couldn’t eat regular sausage and pepperonis, but that turkey sausage and pepperonis were okay and tasted yummy. Everything was fine until the past couple months when I figured out that I probably shouldn’t indulge on a ton of pizza and pop in the evening because I’d wake up around 2am and spend the next 24 hours in the bathroom…. One of these nights was January 1- that day I had drank 64 oz of pop (I KNOW) and decided that it wasn’t worth it, and quit drinking pop. I made it through the 4 day migraine and I was so excited that I posted on Facebook about it. Everyone thought it was a resolution and I pretty much got the attitude that everyone gives people who make resolutions. I hate it. I just made a change for my health and it happened to coincide for with the new year!

    Anyway, that got out of control. /end rant. but seriously.

      Haha it’s totally safe to rant here, Cassie! I’ve been on, like, a four year crusade to kick my Diet Coke habit, but it’s just so damn addictive.

    I’M DOING THIS WITH YOU! I did your DietBet in September and won, then gained it all back in Oct when we bought a new house/moved into it/I ate all the things. I was just telling a friend of mine that I was gonna find another one to join this week.
