Why Your Blog Needs a Break

by Roo on February 10, 2014

in blogging biz, miscellany

LOL fine, it doesn’t. Maybe it doesn’t. I just want it to start trending so I can feel less weird about taking a blogging break.

Reasons why bloggers don’t take a break:

1) It can mess with your Google street cred. Google likes sites that update regularly, and will send more traffic to sites that do.

2) Direct and indirect income drop. No blogging = fewer pageviews = fewer ad revenue. A dip also jacks with your numbers. When you’re working with brands, they like to hear numbers, so when the break is over I’ll likely have to edit my media kit a little bit to reflect a new six month average.

3) Out of sight, out of mind. When you’re not blogging, readers inevitably forget about you. :'( SNIIIIIIIIFF.

Reasons why bloggers should take a break:

1) It’s good for your writing. Outside of blogging, I contribute to other websites and I write copy for brands (you know, dumb one-liners on the back of candy bars or whatever). In the course of a week, I do a lotttttt of writing. Being in front of the computer that long makes for a boring human, and I think regular breaks aid the creative process, fo sho. (If I’m working on a copy project, I need solid out-of-the-office time in order to nail down some good copy during my in-the-office-time.)

2) Laundry. I’m only sort of saying this in jest. ::stares::

Reasons why I’m taking a break:

1) The above two reasons.

2) I’m in the middle of a really busy work season. Which is cool! But I also don’t want to turn into an angry dinosaur, which is bad for being creative and sane.

3) I’m so behind on comments and I don’t feel good about it. The community is the best part of any blog, and I love reading your thoughts. :)

What you can do in the meantime:

I don’t know, hug me? Come over for tapas? You’re welcome to poke around on this site as much as you’d like and email me typos you find. I’ll be linking to throwback posts on Facebook. I’m active on Twitter, and I post dumb videos to Instagram. The internet is also full of people who are way cooler and smarter than me, so I’m sure you’ll find someone else to read.

*sob!*

Just kidding, it’s totally cool. But don’t forget me. ::Hunger Games hand salute::

Okay, in reality, it’s not that serious. I’ll probably be back in a week / week and a half / maybe two. :)

HUGS FOR EVERYONE. \(._.)/

Uh, I’m totally late for a dentist appointment. Bye!

So if we all continue to visit your site each day, will your numbers stay the same? Because I have you bookmarked on my address bar, so I can easily click on it every day, haha.

Hahaha, they would, indeed. But even weekends are hard. I probably get 1/4 of the traffic on a Saturday than I do on a Monday, you know?

Take your break, lady. Treat. Yo. Self. We won’t forget you. We think of you every time we get dressed and wish we would finally just buy some dang house sneakers to feel put together and motivated. Or maybe that’s just me? Take two weeks if you need it! Go crazy! Do a load of laundry and put it all away…in the same day! Again, just me?

But for real. Enjoy your break! I’m sure we’ll all be waiting in here like the little aliens in MIB II hiding inside that locker. Except instead of K, we’ll say Roo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJLeBM6-AaM

enjoy your break (although it sounds more like a working break and not a fun break)! Any chance you’ll still pop in on Fridays with some GIFs? Now that Full House Reviewed is finished I don’t know what to do with my Friday mornings!

Roo February 10, 2014 at 2:28 pm

Yeah, it’s a cut out some work to focus on other work break. (Break?) Haha! Hmm, we’ll see about GIFs! Maybe! :)

yes to everything lynn said above :) no worries girl. :) as long as there are archives of GIFs to entertain me, i’ll manage for a week or two :) also, i should be giving birth to a small person some time in the next week or two, so we can throw each other a mutual “welcome back to the blog world” party at the end of the month or something :) said party should involve cheetos. fo sho.

You’re one of my favorite blogger voices, so you won’t be forgotten! And if you put up one of your awesome drawings every now and then, all will be forgiven. :-)

You will be deeply missed! I will especially miss your Friday segments that express accurately how we all feel about things in life. *sniff* Please pop in every now and again.
In all seriousness, though, as a fellow writer, I can vouch with how it is to stay creative when being creative is your job. I hope this break is what you need. I’m glad it’s only for “a week / week and a half / maybe two.” We’ll all hold you to it. :D

Hey Roo,
I’ve always wondered. What does viewing you on feed readers like Feedly and BlogLovin do for bloggers? Enjoy your break!

I inadvertently took a blogging break when life took over, because that happens. The internet didn’t stop, my blog didn’t die and life more or less continued on its merry way. If I had some elite blogging numbers to hang on to, I might feel differently.

Why don’t you gear up some guest bloggers while you are busy keeping sane? I know it’s not the same as reading you, but anything is better than nothing right?

I wish I could like all of these comments. And this post. And you as a person.

I definitely have a loop of blogs that I check daily (well at least when I am at work) so I can do my part of keeping your #s up :)

The day before TIHIFF????? Oh, just scrolled up to see this was posted Monday… hmmm, maybe I’ve been taking a break from reading blogs too. Outed!

Have you been reading my mind? I’ve had absolutely no motivation to write or even read lately. I’ve been pretty much avoiding my computer altogether. I open up my reader, look at the 983 blog posts that are unread, and say “NOPE” and close it out. So many people are producing such great stuff everywhere, and I feel like I’m just sitting here pretending to be in the same crowd. There are other things at play, but it;s good to know that I’m in a normal place right now.
